9 Mistakes To Avoid When Choosing A Feng Shui Consultant:
Mistake #1. Going with only the least expensive or the lowest price to get a 'deal'.
A Feng Shui Consultation should be a stretch for anyone's budget. But, the consultant is usually commiserate with their fee. Beware if the consultant who only asks for $63.00- you'll only get $63 dollars worth of information.
Mistake #2. Enlisting the services of the fastest available consultant.
A Feng Shui consultant who is pushy, & always and readily available, is often not very busy and not in much demand. Do expect to arrange an appointment in advance for someone who is in "demand" and usually booked. This goes along with the theory that you would walk passed a restaurant that is empty, but would wait in line for a restaurant that is heavily populated and bustling- Lots of people know what tastes good, popularity is usually a good sign.
Mistake #3. Not learning a bit about the differences in the styles/schools of thought of Feng Shui.
You may be told to "move" if you choose a particular type of Feng Shui that believes there is no remedy if your house faces the "wrong direction", which would be quite a disappointment. Several other schools and philosophies believe you can remedy any problem. Most of my clients have read a book or two and become confused because there are as many differences of Feng Shui styles. Like the word 'Christianity', who's aim is to 'save souls' there are many different paths to the same end, such as Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostal, Presbyterians, & Lutherans- just to name a few philosophies of Christianity. So too there are many styles of Feng Shui all aim to create Harmony.
Mistake #4. Being in a 'desperate place' (seeking an immediate fix out of frustration) when selecting a Consultant.
Remember Feng Shui can only create harmony, so don't ask if , for example, " can Feng Shui make your neighbor move AWAY!? Or worse cause him harm", No no no. Breathe, think, and plan from a more calm level-headed, researched approach. This often works better than a hasty decision. Remember Feng Shui can only help You. It can never cause harm to others.
Mistake #5. Being too easily impressed with slick packaging and fancy web sites.
Talk or meet first. Seek a quality person who resonates with you and with whom you feel you could trust. Use your instincts.
Mistake #6. Not checking references such as schools and other references. Caution, some individuals 'beef-up' their resumes falsely to impress the unaware.
Mistake #7. Not being aware of the difference between an Interior Decorator or Interior Designer and a Qualified Feng Shui Consultant.
Feng Shui Consultants don't sell furniture or drapes or hire flooring men or contractors.
Mistake #8. Hesitating to ask questions such as what is your style or school of beliefs? What shall I expect? Have you had positive results in your practice?
Should you be hesitant to ask what style and school of beliefs, you may be told you have to move, see mistake #3. Feng Shui Consultants are people, not Gods. So don’t be shy, do your due diligence before you hire your expert.
Mistake #9. Being fooled by titles like ‘Master’.
Since this profession is not overseen by any one governing body, anyone can call themselves anything. If someone refers to themselves as ‘Master-so-in-so’, ask them “who made them one?” or are they self-appointed?
Mistake #10. Being unclear about what it is that you want. Being vague with your communication, and not asking for what you realistically need.
As with any analysis, you must be clear about what your problems are and what your expected outcome is. Your communication and your follow through are essential. Since timing is not something Feng Shui Consultants have power over, don’t expect miracles overnight. You should discuss realistically what your needs are.
